Groups are dynamic organisms. While there are predictable elements in every group, it is also equally true that each group develops a personality, a way of being that is more than just the sum of its parts.
Groups pressure individuals to take on both assigned roles, as well as dynamic, unassigned roles. Getting to know personal and group valences and how they are being enacted and thus are affecting the moment-to-moment group activity can bring insight to other more complex group dynamics. Awareness of group dynamics allows a group to function efficiently and creatively as members are able to move freely from one role to another as needed either to accomplish a task or to provide emotional or other types of support.
Group consultation can help a group to get to know itself, its patterns and its way of making use of its members. It is aimed more to the group than to the individual, although individuals can greatly benefit from group process analysis.
